Silver Coast Life - Lost in Translation!

I moved to Portugal almost 5 years ago and now definitely consider the Silver Coast my home. It is such a great place to live and has so much to offer me and my family.

Since moving to the Silver Coast I have tried my hardest to learn Portuguese and can now make myself understood in most situations, although I am very far from fluent. Our five year old son has managed to pick up the language with no trouble at all speaking fluently to his teacher and school friends with a perfect Portuguese accent.

Learning Portuguese has been a great source of entertainment to both myself and my husband, with many translations causing no end of amusement. For instance, the word for dog in Portuguese is ‘Cao’, which is pronounced ‘cow’. The word for turkey (as in Christmas) is ‘peru’, apparently this is because the Portuguese assumed the bird originated from Peru just as us Brits thought it came from Turkey!

The Silver Coast has many little towns and villages with highly amusing names, such as Cabeça Gorda, which in English translates to ‘Fat Head’, Manteigas which means ‘Butters’ and I have noticed several villages with the name of Chaos! The more I learn of this Latin based, romantic language and this wonderful country the more I love it.

Welcome to Portugal, Bem Vindo a Portugal!

Silver Service on the Silver Coast

The Silver Coast is blessed with numerous restaurants, from international fine dining to tiny rustic traditional Portuguese places tucked away off the beaten track and one of my absolute favourites is Restaurante O Cortiço on the main road that links Caldas da Rainha to Alcobaça.
This large friendly restaurant has been in business for decades and is always busy and bustling with a great atmosphere.
I visited O Cortiço on my very first trip to the Silver Coast way back in 1988 (obviously I was very young!) and still see the same team of friendly efficient waiters working there today.
They specialise in Wild Boar but also have an extensive menu featuring Portuguese dishes and comfort food at its best. The generous portions are often big enough to share between two and everything is freshly and expertly cooked.
The name O Cortiço means the Honeycombe which is a good description of the labyrinth of rooms that are gradually opened up as the place fills up with hungry customers, meaning that this huge restaurant never feels empty even when you are one of the first to arrive.
The restaurant is open all day, seven days a week which is quite unusual for Portugal so whenever you are feeling in need of a bite to eat, you now know where to come.
Restaurante O Cortiço is just a short drive from Sao Martinho do Porto and Salir do Porto.

Learn a Little Lingo!

Portuguese is spoken by over 210 million people worldwide making it the 6th most spoken language. Brazil obviously plays a large part in boosting the numbers but other than here in Portugal it is also spoken in other old colonies such as East Timor and Macau.
The language as we know it today has evolved from the Latin spoken by the Romans when they first arrived in the Iberian Peninsula in the 3rd century BC. It evolved over the centuries emerging as a mature language around the 15th century.
Living and working here on the Silver Coast means I have plenty of opportunity to improve my loose grasp of Portuguese, I find I get enormous pleasure from learning a new word or phrase.
There are many Portuguese teachers keen to supplement their income by teaching the language to us Brits, including the best teacher I have ever had, a retired lady who gives lessons in the library in Sao Martinho do Porto.
The helpful Portuguese government welcomes people who decide to relocate to this wonderful country and offers free Portuguese lessons to eager newcomers. It is great fun and a really good way to make new friends, (although you will clearly not make many Portuguese friends this way!)
Even though a lot of Portuguese people speak English, and are happy to do so at every opportunity, I thoroughly recommend learning at least a little of their language, so to get you started here are a few basics:
Bom Dia - Good Morning
Boa Tarde – Good Afternoon
Boa Noite – Good Night
Sou Ingles - I am English
Como está? - How are you?
Eu não falo Português - I don't speak Portuguese
Oh, and one last one, Cervja - Beer (very important!)

More Café Culture

Have you ever been to Lisboa Patisserie in London? There are actually a few establishments with this name but the one that first springs to mind is the well known café on Golbourne Road in trendy Notting Hill.
This simple little cafe has become a bit of a destination venue for Londoners trying to bring back happy memories of time spent here in Portugal - apparently the Pasteis de Natas (custard tarts) are almost as good as the real thing!
Well, here in Sao Martinho do Porto we have our own version, a stylish new café bar has opened in a fabulous location on the seafront with stunning views of the bay.
Martinhos opened in December to rave reviews and is fast becoming the place to go for food and drinks with a British theme.
The menu is proving very popular with the locals, so much so that apparently, an elderly Portuguese couple arrived the other night with a note written by their English speaking daughter asking for Fish and Chips with mushy peas!
As the only English café in Sao Martinho do Porto the owners are very keen to keep up their high standards and become ambassadors for English cuisine. They also offer occasional live music which together with the beautiful location promises a great night out.
The Silver Coast and especially Sao Martinho do Porto has a rather exclusive image, and we are proud to be part of the real Portugal, but a little business like this seems to do much to cement relations between Portugal and Great Britain – the oldest alliance in history!

Beach Cricket

My thoughts have turned to cricket recently, our office here on the Silver Coast seems to be staffed by a disproportionate number of South Africans and as a big fan of English cricket I find myself in the minority concerning the current test series taking place in South Africa between the home side and us Brits - England are one nil up in the series by the way.
Cricket and Portugal may not be two words often found in the same sentence, but you might be surprised to know that cricket is alive and well and played with great enthusiasm on the Silver Coast.
One of my main concerns when considering our move to Portugal from the UK was that my husband would be able to continue to play cricket on a regular basis, so a quick search of the internet revealed the website of The Portuguese Cricket Federation. The funny thing is that when you mention cricket to most Portuguese people they immediately think of polo, so there is clearly a lot of work to do to promote the game within this country. Cricket has long been played by ex-pats throughout the Algarve but now the Silver Coast can boast its own venue.
The new cricket pitch in Santarem constructed a couple of years ago by a very keen ex-pat cricket fan is host to regular matches throughout the summer and well into October, and is fast becoming a favourite destination for touring sides from England. What a great combination, cricket, sunshine, Portuguese hospitality and the beach just up the road!
If you prefer a more casual game of beach cricket then you are well provided for here on the Silver Coast. With mile upon mile of golden sandy beaches at places such as Foz do Arelho, Salir do Porto, Sao Martinho do Porto and Nazare you have plenty of space to knock it for six.
Howzat!

Silver Coast, Portugal – Europe’s favorite “drive to” holiday destination.

Each summer season the Silver coast fills up with holiday makers. The tourism industry on the Silver Coast has grown exponentially over the past number of years and a large proportion of these holidays makers tend to drive to the Silver Coast from all over Europe. The French, Spanish, Dutch, Belgians and Germans in particular, can all drive to the Silver Coast with relative ease and comfort.
The Portuguese government has long recognized the Silver Coast region as being an area of huge touristic potential. Recent large scale infrastructure improvements to accommodate these “drive to” holiday makers have included the new A8 motorway which has opened the Silver Coast up holiday makers who choose to “drive to” their holiday destination. Seaside towns on the Silver Coast such as Sao Martinho do Porto, Nazare and Foz do Arelho have all prospered from this new holiday business.

There are of course obvious benefits of taking you car with you on holidays. First and foremost would be a much lower cost of holiday , no extortionate airport taxes or baggage charges , no peak season car rental rip offs and better control of your travel timetable . Especially if you are renting an apartment on the Silver Coast you can load up the car with all your holiday gear plus certain home comforts that you just can’t take on a plane.

Figures released from Silver Coast Hospitality ( www.silvercoasthospitailty.com) confirm that over 75% of their summer rentals are from holiday makers who “drive to” the Silver Coast especially from neighboring countries such as Spain and France .

This is great news for owners of holiday apartments being rented out on the Silver Coast during the summer period . The rental market is growing and with expected yields of up to 6% for well located luxury property , the Silver Coast is a fantastic place to invest in now before it matures . Regarded by many experts as the very last “emerging market” in Western Europe the Silver Coast is an investor’s paradise .

Life on the Silver Coast

I play guitar and sing. I am not very good which is why this is my day job. I play quite often at the Irish pub in Nazare and was recently phoned by another pub owner on the Silver Coast and asked to come and play at his pub on a Friday night.
Now, it is quite a scary thing playing in front of a lot of people that you don’t know, so I have started inviting people I know to attend, don’t worry, this is not an invitation. Our offices are in São Martinho do Porto and we have wonderful Portuguese lady who cooks lunch for us every day. I told her in my appalling Portuguese that I am playing at Status Bar in São Martinho do Porto on Friday night. She shot me down, she has plans, Selena must be in her 50’s and on Friday night she is going to Karaoke in Obidos. Apparently Selena is a big Karaoke fan and does the whole dancing and singing thing. By the way she makes the most amazing potato dishes.
The point of this whole story is . . . once again I am struck by the people who live on the Silver Coast, how young at heart they are, how alive they are and the amazing life that they have here.

There is something about this place that makes you feel alive . . . it is undeniable

Portuguese Lessons on the Silver Coast

I live in the beautiful town of São Martinho do Porto on the Silver Coast, there are a many things that I love about this place, the bay is stunning, Nazare is just 10 minutes away and is a sight to behold at sunset and home to the Silver Coasts only Irish pub, Obidos castle is spectacular and just 15 minutes away and if that wasn’t enough I can be in Lisbon in less than an hour and watch live sport or some of the best bands in the world perform live.

I have found one more thing that I love and it once again demonstrates the hospitality and kindness that one can experience on the Silver Coast. 5 minutes walk from my apartment is the local school in São Martinho do Porto where for € 6.50 I can attend Portuguese lessons. This is an initiative organized by the tourism board in São Martinho do Porto and a Portuguese lady volunteers her services 3 times a week and teaches me and 20 other people Portuguese.

She is a wonderful woman, warm, inviting and kind . . . just like the Silver Coast.

How to choose the right Estate Agent in Portugal (Part 2)

If you are an overseas buyer then it will be in your best interest to choose an Agent who is based in Portugal and who has plenty of experience in dealing with foreign buyers. Obviously the issues and concerns that you will have prior and throughout the purchase will be completely different than that of a local Portuguese buyer. Don’t forget that you are in a foreign country and remember there is a language barrier especially pertaining to purchase contracts etc. It is very important that the Agent you choose to work with, is based in the area you want to purchase, in the case of the Silver Coast, you want an agent who is central to all the main areas like Obidos, São Martinho do Porto, Nazare, Caldas da Rainha and Foz do Arelho, an agent who can provide you with all the back up and support that you will require to make the purchase of your villa or apartment a smooth and enjoyable one.

There is a misconception that many overseas buyers have to not take recommendations from their Agents with regards to lawyers, mortgage brokers, management companies etc. If you are working with an established and reputable company then you should listen to their advice. Any recommendations for lawyers or mortgage brokers made by your Agent must be independent as stated under Portuguese law. If you have any doubts about the honesty of the Estate Agent then you should not be working with them in the first place.

Property Investment Tips (part3)

Prices for property on the Silver Coast range from just €150k for new build 2 bedroom apartments walking distance to the beach to only €235k for a new 3 bedroom villa with pool. With prices as low as these, every indicator points to the Silver Coast area having one of the highest growth potentials within the European Union . The area attracts buyers from all over Europe and is only a day’s drive from the centre of the EU. Many continental Europeans do in choose to drive to the Silver Coast which in turn lowers the cost of their holiday meaning they revisit the area more than once each year.

Local buyer interest in the Silver Coast is also strong with many Portuguese recognizing the investment potential of this area. In fact the Portuguese government has been pumping funds into the Silver Coast area since early 2000. Infrastructure improvements have included new motorways, schools, hospitals, commercial centers and within a few years a new high speed train link to Madrid and a new international airport. Currently receiving over 8.8 million euro a day from the EU the government is keen to upgrade the entire greater Lisbon area including the Silver Coast. All this of course has to be taken into consideration when weighing up the investment potential of this area.

Our advice to you …… take a few days , get on a plane to Lisbon and let us introduce you to some fantastic real estate opportunities before you lose out!

Ronaldo off injured but Portugal beat Hungary

The Silver Coast air must have done the trick when the Portuguese national team trained in Obidos ahead of their crucial game against Hungary on the 10th of October.

Even though Ronaldo went off injured within 30 minutes, Portugal produced a fine team performance to win 3 – 0 in Lisbon in front of 50,000 passionate supporters. 2 Goals from Simão Sabrosa and 1 goal from Liedson saw the home team come out on top with the vital win.

With Denmark beating Sweden 1 – 0 Portugal now needs to beat Malta on Wednesday to stand a chance of qualifying for the world cup.

It looks like the magic of Obidos may just have done the trick.

Our 100th blog

This is our 100th blog! And what better way to celebrate then to tell you another wonderful story about this amazing place that I am so happy to call my home.

I was recently on leave and decided to spend some time in Cascais. I had a wonderful time resting, sleeping in and not having to worry about anything work related for a whole week. On Sunday I made my way back to my apartment in São Martinho do Porto on the Silver Coast and just my luck my car starts to overheat, the oil was fine and the water was fine but for some reason it kept overheating. I took evasive action turned off at the next off ramp and ended up in a little village called . . . ‘I don’t know what’.

There I was parked outside a little quinta that belonged to an old Portuguese farmer, let’s just say we had some communication problems but we both agreed that the car was not working. As I waited for the tow truck to come the old man and his wife were wonderful, offering me, a complete stranger, food, water and even beer.

I managed to get a tow truck driver to take me to a mechanic in Caldas Da Rainha. Now when you have a 30 minute trip with someone who doesn’t have much to say in Portuguese never mind English the trip feels a lot longer but then the unthinkable happened, the grumpy, non-talkative tow truck driver put in a Rod Stewart cd and all of a sudden there was no more awkward silence as we sang along to the classics together.

It turned out to be a great day and once again I was reminded of what a special place this is.

Here’s to an incredible country and here’s to the next 100 blogs.

Cultural hub on the Silver Coast, Portugal

It’s a warm Friday night in mid July, and the strains of 18th century classical music drift through the streets of Caldas da Rainha, as this bustling market town on Portugal’s Silver Coast celebrates its annual Festa da Musica or Music Festival.

Founded in 1485 by Portugal’s Queen Leonor around the medieval hot springs on the site, and lying within the Estremadura region only 50 minutes drive from Lisbon, Caldas da Rainha (or the “Queen’s Springs”) is one of Portugal’s most historic spa towns, now rapidly building a fresh reputation as the region’s leading cultural centre.

“From 1485 until the late 19th century, Caldas was one of Portugal’s most famous spa towns, and a favourite destination of the Portuguese Royal Family,” says Dr. Fernando da Costa, head of the Town Hall and responsible for driving the town’s rapidly rising profile.

“Now we want to start recreating those glory days. Famous Portuguese painters and authors like Jose Malhoa, Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro and Gil Vicente have all lived and worked here in Caldas and we have just opened a new cultural centre to host our regular programme of operas, jazz concerts and recitals. Portugal’s best known art and design college is here in Caldas, and we are also just about to invest Euros 10m in renovating the historic town centre.“

Cascais, near Lisbon, goes green.

Not quite on the Silver Coast but close enough; in Cascais, the council has just announced that 40 new parks and green spaces will be constructed in the already beautiful area, located close to Lisbon. Cascais already well known for its Marina, beaches and breathtaking sea facing cliffs will now be well known for its parks, gardens and green spaces. In addition to this, the 100 hundred parks and public gardens that already exist will be renovated and improved.

The idea behind this is to encourage more time spent outdoors and for the people of the community to meet each other and interact. Another testament to the good nature and spirit amongst Portuguese communities, the council is spending €5 Million on the project.

Champions League Football in Portugal

Last night (19 Aug 09) I made the short trip from Sao Martinho Do Porto to Lisbon to watch the champions league qualifier between Sporting Lisbon and Fiorentina from Italy. The stadium was packed the green flags and scarves were in abundance and the Sporting fans were in good voice.
I was seated right next to the Fiorentina fans who for such a small number were also making themselves heard. At big football matches like this one there are always plenty of police on hand, football violence is a well documented occurance. But last night I saw something that I had never seen at a football match before. At halftime a large group of Sporting Lisbon fans approached the fence, on the other side of the fence were the Fiorentina fans, the sporting fans took off their green scarves and offered it as a gesture to the visitors in exchange for their purple scarves. At first the Italian vistiors looked quite confused but once the first exchange had been made many more followed, this was quite a sight to behold, oppostion fans from different clubs, different countries swopping scarves and shaking hands.

The game was a very entertaining affair ending in 2-2 draw with both sets of fans applauding the other and the game ending in high spirits, no problems and no violence.

Yet another great display of Portuguese hospitality.

The apartment has a disco and bar area in the basement and essentially could be a T3 with the ammount of space it has.

Silver Coast: Wine, music and chariot tours

The bar “Troca-Tintos” in Obidos, in partnership with wine company “Vale Zias” and chariots company Vale do Oeste, is doing something special on Friday nights in Obidos, from the3rd of July till the end of September.
The proposal includes wine tastings and tours in town, at night, from 10 pm until 2 am.

The “Vale Zias” wine is made from a single variety, the “SyraH”, a wine of excellent taste that has been very well accepted within the restaurant business.

While experiencing the wine produced in Cercal, county of Cadaval, one tastes gourmet cheeses or other treats, and you hear Portuguese popular music, jazz or fado.

In addition, a chariot tours through Obidos for over twenty minutes. Before, after or even during the tasting event, the visitors can travel by chariot through the village of Obidos. Blankets are provided to keep warm.

This partnership promotes local tourism, offering a different dimension, adding another exciting possibility to a Silver Coast visitor. May the enchantment begin….

Michael Jackson remembered on the Silver Coast and all over Portugal

The news of Michael Jacksons tragic death was greeted with sadness all over Portugal, his music and his dance moves were very popular among Portuguese people of all ages. In every bar and club here on the Silver Coast, Michael Jackson songs were very popular and enjoyed by all. Portugal is a very traditional country with values that are passed down from generation to generation and one of these values are paying your respect to those that have passed away. There is a deep underlying value that when someone dies no matter what has happened in their lives, they are to be honored and respected. Another value that the Portuguese hold to when it comes to death, is after mourning comes a celebration of that person’s life. Michael Jackson will be celebrated this weekend. Live bands and DJ’s alike, playing in places like Sao Martinho do Porto, Nazare, Foz do Arelho, Caldas da Rainha and all over Portugal will be paying tribute to the man who brought joy to so many people with his music.

CD shops all over the Silver Coast and the rest of Portugal were flooded on Friday with people looking to buy one last piece of this pop icon. This weekend in bars, beach front café’s , restaurants he will be spoken about, remembered and celebrated.
Rest in peace Michael.

Obidos Castle, a gem on the Silver Coast

Located on the beautiful Silver Coast, a scenic 40 minute drive from Lisboa airport, Óbidos Castle is one of the 13 world heritage sights in Portugal. It is one of the treasures of Portugal. This breath taking castle has won the affection of all who have been privileged enough to walk its walls or stroll through its charming cobble streets. As far back as the Roman times people fought to keep this magical place in their possession. After the fall of the Roman Empire it was ruled by the Moors who fought to protect it until 1148 when it was finally claimed in the name of Portugal.

Under Portuguese rule and thanks to its location along the Atlantic Ocean Obidos flourished into a major trading port. In the 13th century Obidos captured the affection of Queen Dona Isabella who received the castle as a wedding gift. In the 16th century the Port was unfortunately dammed up due to large silt deposits at the river delta, however, this remained a favourite destination for the royal families. As per tradition it continued to be a wedding gift to every new queen of Portugal for years to come.

When standing on the ancient walls overlooking the valley or the quaint village it is easy to understand why it made such a lovely wedding gift. Today Obidos, only 20 minutes from Sao Martinho do Porto and Nazare remains a popular destination for visitors, enjoying the restaurants, shops and festivals.

There are 2 holidays happening in Portugal this week, ‘Portugal day’ on the 10th of July and then a religious holiday on the 11th. This week promises to be a festive one, with live music, fairs and street parties happening all over the Silver Coast.

Emergence of Portuguese Buyers and the strengthening of the pound

Here on the Silver Coast we have seen a sudden increase in the amount of Portuguese buyers. Not just an increase in local people looking at property but an increase in the amount of people with money looking for anything from re-sales to off plan properties or apartments to villas, they have money and they want to buy now.

This is a sign of the times, Portuguese buyers have been very quiet for since late last year, but there is a general consensus that the market is at its lowest point and the deals that are available now are not going to be around for much longer.

Another sign of change in the market has been the strengthening of the pound. A month ago the pound was sitting at 1.09 to the euro and literally over 24 hours it went 1.13 to the euro, since then it has stabilized and has been hovering around the 1.14-1.16 mark.

Developers and builders on the Silver Coast, especially in places like Sao Martinho do Porto and Nazare, will have taken note of this and will start getting braver when buyers come knocking. As it stands now there are amazing deals to be had with all property; re-sales, off-plan, villas, bungalows and apartments. But the market will pick up and the prices will rise.

The best time to buy property, especially in Portugal and more specifically the Silver Coast is during a recession, based on how much more you get for your money and return on investment.
